Convention Center Expansion: $2.62B Investment in Downtown LA
- Mayor Karen Bass has just approved a $2.62B expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center, one of the largest civic projects ahead of the 2028 Olympics
- Construction starts October 2025 and will modernize and expand exhibit halls, meeting rooms, and event spaces
- 15,000 jobs expected during construction and operation, plus an estimated $652M in new city tax revenue over 30 years
- The project will connect the South and West halls, adding multipurpose space to attract world-class events well beyond the Olympics
- Supporters say it will cement LA’s role as a global convention hub; critics note that Downtown still struggles with graffiti, safety, and infrastructure needs
- Councilmember Traci Park, who heads the council’s committee on tourism and trade, said “This project will be transformative for downtown, and I truly believe the catalyst for future investment and redevelopment,” she said. “We need to bring our city back to life, and with world events looming, we don’t have time to wait.”
